Who we are

Our Story

The Motor Neurone Disease Association of South Africa (MNDA SA) was founded on a fundamental belief: that no one should face Motor Neurone Disease alone.

For more than 25 years, we have stood as the only national nonprofit organisation dedicated entirely to supporting people diagnosed with MND and their families throughout South Africa.

Our journey began with a group of passionate individuals who recognised the profound challenges faced by those living with MND. They understood that beyond medical care, there was an urgent need for human connection, practical guidance, and a community that truly grasped the unique realities of this condition.

Today, we honor that founding vision with unwavering dedication. We journey alongside patients and their families from the moment of diagnosis, providing integrated, holistic services and community-based support that addresses not just the medical aspects of MND, but the human need for understanding, dignity, and hope.

Our Vision

We envision a South Africa where everyone affected by MND receives dignity, timely support, and compassionate care from diagnosis through every stage of their journey.

Our mission is to create a comprehensive national network that connects medical excellence with human compassion, ensuring all individuals access the resources and emotional support they need.

We work toward educated communities, well-prepared healthcare professionals, and empowered families—where every act of care, no matter how small, restores dignity, creates meaning, and nurtures hope in the face of life’s greatest challenges.

Our Approach

From the moment of MND diagnosis, MNDA SA becomes part of your support network. We are more than an organization—we are a community of care that offers medical information, practical resources, and genuine human connection.

Our strength lies in our people: dedicated board members, compassionate professionals, devoted volunteers, and our national network of nine trained Lay Advisors working alongside medical experts. They are the heart of our patient care, providing crucial psycho-social support and helping families access the care they need, often in the comfort of their own homes.

We are committed to meeting families wherever they are in their journey, bridging critical gaps in South Africa’s healthcare system with compassion, dignity, and quiet courage. Our goal is always to enhance quality of life and wellbeing for every person living with MND and every family we serve.

Understanding MND in South Africa

Motor Neurone Disease presents unique challenges in the South African context.

While the condition itself is complex, the barriers to care can compound these difficulties, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to specialized equipment, home-based care, counselling, or even timely diagnosis may be limited.

In urban centers, some individuals may access private care, but the majority of South Africans rely on public healthcare systems that, despite dedicated efforts, can struggle to meet the complex, multifaceted needs of those living with chronic conditions like MND. This is where MNDA SA steps in—bridging these gaps with integrated support services that complement medical care.
