A Gift of Independence: Portia Pheto’s Wheelchair Story

This quarter, we’re pleased to spotlight Tomco, a valued partner whose genuine care for vulnerable community members shows what social responsibility really looks like.

When Donny Kleinhans from Tomco reached out to us with an offer to donate mobility equipment to someone in need, it was a heartfelt gesture—real care for people facing daily challenges. This partnership created a special moment for Portia Pheto, one of our community members, whose life has changed significantly thanks to the wheelchair she received.

Donny Kleinhans and the Tomco team shared what motivates them: “As a company, it gives us great pleasure to contribute to a better life for an individual. Seeing the bright smiles of those we support brings us tremendous satisfaction. We will always consider requests where a special need exists, and we remain committed to supporting vulnerable people who deserve the utmost care and dignity.”

For Portia, this wheelchair means independence. As she put it: “This wheelchair will make life and my mobility so much easier. I won’t depend on family to wheel me around anymore. It gives me independence and brings peace of mind to my family. We’re all liberated on both sides.”
Portia can now look forward to things many of us take for granted—shopping trips, time in her yard, and getting around on her own terms. “For me, gaining independence is the most liberating thing one can have. My family doesn’t have to push me around—they feel relieved too.”

We’re grateful to Tomco for their thoughtful approach to community support and for making a real difference in Portia’s life. If you’d like to become a Friend of MNDA and help create meaningful change in someone’s life, visit our website for more information.
